3 things to focus on as an au pair

So how do you get the most out of your experience? How will you know at the end of your time as an Au Pair that you’ve succeeded? That you used your time well?

Each Au Pair experience is completely unique and that’s the beauty of it. That’s precisely what makes it so special. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a family’s first Au Pair or you’re their eleventh, you get to decide what will make your time worthwhile.

We’ve discovered three key areas to focus on that will help shape your time as an Au Pair so you can be sure you’re getting the very best from the experience.

Mastering your Au Pair duties

Yes, we advocate for Au Pairing as a pathway to get you where you want to go, but Au Pairing is still an adventure. It’s not simply a stepping-stone with no intrinsic value.

As you find out your responsibilities with your host family it can feel like a lot to remember. Write down things as they are mentioned and focus on getting your head around the family’s routine. Once you start to see how the family operates, it can be easier to see where you can fit in amongst it all.

After a few months you might begin to notice that you’ve committed some of your family’s schedules to memory, you remember where things live and are suddenly the authority on things people have misplaced.

Immerse yourself in the culture

If there’s one thing we have in common, it’s that nothing lights us up like the word TRAVEL. Just reading that word made your eyes sparkle didn’t it? I mean, look at you.

But Au Pairing isn’t just about being a tourist in a new city. It’s about totally immersing yourself in that culture. It’s about becoming a local.

Ask yourself how many locals are you surrounding yourself with? What kind of local experiences have you taken the time to learn about? What advice are you listening to?

Sometimes the people you meet along the way naturally pull you in unexpected directions, and that’s why it’s important to check-in with your values and remind yourself what you’re hoping to achieve.

Assign yourself a project

If you really want to make your Au Pair experience your own, we highly recommend committing yourself to a project during your time as an Au Pair.

It can be anything you want it to be. Perhaps it’s a personal project – have you always wanted to learn a language, or take drawing classes, or organize all of the photos you’ve ever taken? Perhaps you’d like to use the time to develop a work or career-related business idea, launch your singing career or start a photography side-hustle?

Whatever it is for you, having a project will add so much more to the experience. Not only will your host family appreciate your drive, and the passion you have for your project, but it will also lead to a world of experiences you might not otherwise encounter.
